I was at a seminar once (can’t remember what it was about), and invited one of my employees to attend it with me. There were maybe 100 or so people in the room, and at the end the hosts went into the typical Q&A session. As I raised my hand to ask a question, my associate looked at me with deer-in-the-headlights eyes and asked, incredulously, ‘Are you really going to ask a question?!?’ To her it was simply inconceivable to do something like that. There is an entire block of readers that will NEVER consider leaving a comment, itâ€™s just not part of their personality style.

My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success. She said that ‘achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others, and that’s nice, too, but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about success.’

Hey Carrie-
Thanks for the early morning laugh on the Today Show. Always been a fan, and not for your star wars gig. Post-cards from the edge got my attention. Not for nothin’ i have two little boys…so you can imagine how many light sabres i have littering my house. anyway…you make me laugh. it’s almost 11:00am EST and this suburban mother of two, with a masters degree already has buzz on. used to be a part-time type-A personality, now i just look forward to my nightly seroquel and a mick-ultra light over ice. i’m watching my weight. not a mick jagger over ice but that would be just as satisfying. again, anyhoo…besides your stardom, i have quietly identified w/ your struggles. alcoholism with a dash of mental illnes. nothing major, a little depression and anxiety. we downplay it right? is downplay one or two words? i’m a little strickler for grammar. too much latin in high school. i’m rambling. i’ll be purchasing your new book and hopefully coming to nyc to see you in person. in the mean time, i’ll be checking the waring labels on my prescriptions. truth be told, i wouldn’t mind if my husband left me for another man. whatever your doing…keep it up…we need you and your hilarious honesty.

I haven’t checked out your blog lately. I apologize if this isn’t a timely, relevant, or interesting comment. I don’t know if you keep track of new comments on old blog articles. I just read a blog by an old friend named Matt Alber, a gay L.A. singer, who attended the party with Stephen Spinella. He played the keyboard in your bathroom & sang really loudly. I wonder if you heard him. His voice is like butta & he said he loved the fried chicken & yams. Please come perform to the cultural vacuum/void/hole that is Southcentral Kansas if possible.

Wow, even in your blogs, Carrie, you write beautifully. I’ve been telling everyone about “Wishful Drinking”! I’ll have to buy “Postcards from the Edge” because everyone says how beautifully it’s written.
I love your line “I absorb everything, wallpaper…” . I guess the thing I really love about your writing is that it’s funny AND written beautifully!
